7 Christmas Kitchen and Bathroom Decor Ideas That’ll Turn Your Home into a Winter Wonderland

When it comes to holiday decorating, everybody knows what to do with their front yard and their living room. But what about those spaces without a fireplace, or room for a tree? Considering that homeowners spend ample amounts of time in their kitchen and visit the bathroom a few times a day, it might be nice to bring some seasonal decor to these spaces as well. But how do you go about decorating your kitchen for Christmas? And what about Christmas decor ideas for the bathroom? Let’s take a look.

Add some Christmas accents to your kitchen

Nutcrackers are lined up along a counter..

Who says you can’t hang up stockings in the kitchen? Small seasonal accents around the kitchen can go a long way toward making it more festive. If you’ve been eyeing a new piece of kitchen equipment?and you know that Santa brought it already?perhaps leave it wrapped and ribboned on the kitchen counter instead of under the tree. One creative idea you won’t see too often is to swap out your regular cabinet hardware for some more festive, seasonal door knobs. Your accent pieces can also combine the practical with the eye-catching, like adding a nutcracker to the counter next to a sheer bag of chestnuts ready to be cracked.

Create a centerpiece for your kitchen island

A festive Christmas centerpiece graces a set table.
If you have a kitchen island or some empty counter space, a Christmas centerpiece can make the mood more festive. A centerpiece tray creates a nice boundary for a small nativity scene. Or you could opt for something wintery, such as a landscape of frosted miniature trees, perhaps sprinkled with some Christmas ornaments. One traditional centerpiece idea is to lay a wreath on its side and add four candles. In fact, this arrangement is actually the original advent calendar. Centerpieces can also double as a way to have some family or couple bonding time with a DIY project. There are lots of fun Christmas centerpiece ideas, some of which involve using things you already might have around the house, like cardboard, ribbons, and old corks.

Kiss under the mistletoe

A holiday wreath hangs in the window.

Everyone knows that setting poinsettias on top of your buffet, or draping garlands above the mantelpiece add some holiday spirit to the living room. But there’s no reason you can’t do the same thing in the kitchen. If there is space between the top of your cabinetry and the ceiling, that’s a great place to add some evergreen and holly berries. You can also add garlands around the windows, to the edge of your shelving, or in the corner where the counter meets the backsplash. If you have hanging light fixtures, you could hang a little bit of mistletoe on them, tied with some nice red, green, or gold holiday ribbon. Who knows… a kiss might even happen under the mistletoe next time you’re preparing dinner together.

Swap out the service pieces

Holiday plates add a Christmas touch to your shelves.

If you have glass cabinetry or a buffet that displays your table service (like plates and wine glasses), this can provide another holiday decorating opportunity for your kitchen. Red etched Christmas wine glasses add a festive touch, as do holiday themed china with Christmas or winter images. You can use some plate stands to display your plates on cabinet shelves or countertops. If you have dish towels or a drying rack in your kitchen, you can also swap those out for something wintery. If you don’t have any space to display your dishes, and you also have something like a breakfast nook or counter, you could also set the table for the holidays and leave it set to show off your seasonal service pieces.

One fun piece of chinaware that’s very timely for cold winter months are mugs. If you’re handy you can install a hanging mug rack under your cabinets to show off your winter cheer. You could also leave mugs on the counter and stuff them with candy canes or hot chocolate materials.

Add some floral arrangements to your bathroom

Bright red poinsettias contrast with dark green leaves.

Poinsettias are a holiday tradition that can really brighten up a room. Consider putting an arrangement of everybody’s favorite red petaled flower into the corner of your bathroom. If you can get one set of them in each corner, it will brighten up the room even more. Keep in mind that if you have dogs, poinsettias can cause them to have stomach pain if eaten, so other types of holiday floral arrangements for the floor may be your best bet, or perhaps using fake flowers. Another space for floral arrangements is the lid of the toilet tank or the countertop by the sink, or any shelving units you might typically use for toilet paper rolls. A garland around the mirror will also look really pleasing and provide a nice seasonal frame to anyone looking at their reflection.

Bring in the seasonal accents and decor

Christmas themed accent pieces rest next to a hand towel.

The bathroom is a natural place for seasonal accent pieces, because you always need a soap dispenser, garbage can, hand towels, and a soap dish. Holiday accent pieces in the bathroom can range from the tastefully traditional to the fun and zany. For a more classic and reserved look, try something like a dark red set of bathroom accessories. Or for a more offbeat and humorous touch, consider adding something like a santa, snowman, or nutcracker soap dispenser. For full bathrooms, you could really go all the way with a complete holiday redecorating: a matching set with a shower curtain, hangers, bath mat, and toilet cover can really take someone by surprise. Wondering what to do with all those holiday cards? Add a small bulletin board to the wall behind your toilet fixture and pin them there.

Add some holiday scents

Handcrafted holiday soaps are ready to be washed with.

The winter months are a traditional time for special scents like peppermint and gingerbread. Swap out your usual soaps and lotions for something holiday related. In addition to making your bathroom countertops have a more festive appearance, they will add something pleasing for the sense of touch and smell as well. Olfactory senses are the ones most strongly linked to positive memories; that said, adding holiday cheer in the soap and lotion department can transform the unlikely bathroom space into a key part of your home’s holidays. In addition to soaps and lotions, you could also buy a small diffuser and add some Christmas-related essential oils to permeate the bathroom air with holiday warmth. A scented candle can serve the same purpose, but with an open flame you will have to use your discretion, especially if you have kids.

Enjoy the holidays in your entire home — kitchen and bathroom included.

As you can see, decorating your kitchen for Christmas or adding a splash of holiday cheer to your bathroom is really not that hard. It just takes a little thinking outside of the box, or the willingness to add traditional holiday touches usually reserved for other spaces like the living room. But if you add these holiday accents, you can really transform these often used spaces into something special and keep the seasonal spirit consistent throughout your home.
