What is Plywood?

Plywood is a manufactured wood material suitable for construction projects. While this is not a visually appealing wood, it is frequently used in the construction of most cabinet boxes due to the fact that those parts of a cabinetry run are obscured from view. Kerf cabinet systems, however, use plywood as a primary material that is left unpainted or stained for a modern industrial appeal.

What gives Plywood its strength is that it is constructed by gluing together wood veneers, which are thin sheets of wood only 3mm or 1/8-inch thick. When the wood is cut, the veneers do have a tendency to splinter if the saw is rushed through. The use of Plywood in the construction of kitchen cabinetry is a great way to defer some cost while maintaining the strength and integrity of the project. Unlike other manufactured woods, such as particleboard, plywood is comparable in strength and durability to that of natural hard woods.
