Do you constantly find yourself wondering why your phone battery is so low? Do you use your iPad to read recipes while cooking dinner? With our world relying so heavily on technology, the amount of available outlets in our kitchen are often far and few between. If all your kitchen appliances are taking up your kitchen outlets, it may be time to design a custom do-it-yourself charging station so your smaller electronics can juice up as well.

Not sure where to start or how to incorporate a DIY charging station into your kitchen? The team at Kitchen Cabinet Kings has put together a list of seven creative (but practical!) do-it-yourself kitchen charging station ideas ? all one which help with organization and innovation in your space!

Upgrade Your Wall Outlets

A charging station doesn’t always need to be a big, fancy upgrade to your kitchen. Sometimes all you need or want is an easy way to plug in a USB-A or USB-C into the outlet without requiring a power adapter. Simply upgrade your traditional kitchen outlets by installing a USB wall outlet. They can be seamlessly integrated into your home’s existing power outlets, providing a clean and efficient charging solution that is simple yet effective. A benefit of this? You can charge multiple devices simultaneously without the need for bulky adapters or power strips.

Install In-Drawer Charging

One of our favorite ways to install a charging station in your kitchen is to set it up within the kitchen drawer. In-drawer charging allows you to get access to a quick charge when you need it without creating excess clutter on your kitchen countertops. This sleek and effective method can be designed using drawer organizers and built-in charging docks, or if you’re working with a smaller budget, a discreetly placed power strip.

Create a Kitchen Island Charging Hub

Kitchen island with built in charging cabinet.
Does your spacious kitchen boast a large kitchen island? If so, this central point of your kitchen is the perfect place for a charging hub that can be easily accessed by everyone. Install a discreet power hub that is affixed directly into the surface of your kitchen island. This prevents creating an eyesore with a powerstrip and allows for both accessibility and functionality. One of our favorite ways to incorporate a discreet charging station into your island is with a pop-up outlet that can be hidden away when not in use and popped up when it’s time to charge your devices.

Opt for an Under-Cabinet Rack

Built-in under-cabinet storage for phone while charging.

Another way to keep your devices off of the countertops is to use an under-cabinet charging rack. You can pick an area in the kitchen where there is available space underneath the cabinets and attach a charging rack. You can mount a powerstrip with various outlet types to the rack which will allow you to keep your cords and devices off the counter while they juice up. This is a great solution for homeowners with a small kitchen where space is at a premium.

Use Floating Shelves

Floating shelf under kitchen cabinet to hold charging devices.

With the kitchen being the heart of your home, it’s no surprise that your counters often become a dumping ground for various knick-knacks. If you want to be able to easily charge your devices without taking up valuable space on your kitchen counters, consider installing floating shelves with built-in charging. If you want to improve the overall aesthetic, you can keep the devices in a decorative bin on the shelf while it charges which will allow the cords to remain tucked away.

Hide Charging within Cabinets

Sometimes you want the convenience of a charging station without the eyesore. Attach a power strip within a kitchen cabinet and building a shelf (or hang a pocket on the back of the cabinet door for a renter-friendly option) to hold the devices while they charge. This allows you to keep the devices hidden away within the cabinet while they charge so they don’t clutter your space.

Build a Mobile Charging Station

Portable wooden charging station for mobile devices.

While we’ve been giving you ways to create a custom charging station in your kitchen, you may find that you also have a need for charging your devices while in other rooms of your home. If you want the juice without the commitment to one location, consider building a mobile charging cart that has power strips attached to it. This will enable you to plug in your devices in the kitchen but then easily relocate the cart to the living room, bedroom, home office, or any room where you may need to plug in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an electrician to upgrade my wall outlets?

No! With a little bit of knowledge and know-how you can easily install your wall outlet upgrades yourself. Make sure you follow a how-to guide to ensure safety protocols when installing it. Keep in mind that if you ever feel stressed about the project, you can call up an electrical professional for assistance.

Are there safety considerations when building a DIY charging station?

Yes, while a DIY charging station is a safe project for the average DIYer, there are a few things to consider for optimal safety. For example, charging devices can produce heat and if there is too much heat in one area, you may find yourself dealing with burning wires, scorched electrical components, or other potential fire hazards. To ensure your devices do not overheat, make sure the charging station is well-ventilated and that you aren’t trying to charge too many devices at one time.

What types of charging ports should I consider for my charging station?

Is your family an Apple or Android household? Are there any devices other than your cell phone that you need to charge regularly? Make a list of the various charging ports you need to ensure they are all included in your DIY charging station. Consider USB ports or a combination of USB-A and USB-C ports to accommodate the most common device types.

Can I use a wireless charger at my charging station?

If you are worried about having too many cords at your charging station, you may want to opt for a wireless charger instead (or in combination with traditional cord chargers). This will allow you to place devices with wireless charging capabilities to simply be placed at your DIY charging station to get juiced up instead of needing to be plugged in the entire time.
