Paint it or stain it
Unfinished birch gives you control over the final color. For paint, sand lightly, remove the dust, and apply a wood primer first. For stain, use a pre-stain conditioner to help the color go on evenly, then protect the wood with a clear topcoat. Follow the finish manufacturer's directions for prep and drying time.
