What makes a slim shaker door slim
Both doors are drawn at the same scale. The hatched band is the frame.
Standard shaker doors use wide stiles and rails around the recessed center panel. Slim shaker doors use the same construction with a narrower frame, leaving more of the panel visible and creating finer lines across a run of cabinets. The difference is easiest to see on wide drawer fronts.

A slim shaker is a shaker cabinet door with narrower stiles and rails, the frame around the recessed center panel. The narrower frame leaves more of the panel visible and creates fewer lines across a row of cabinets.
What is the difference between slim shaker and standard shaker cabinets?
The difference is the width of the frame. Both have a flat recessed center panel and use the same all-plywood cabinet boxes and dovetail drawers. A slim shaker carries less frame around the panel.
Are slim shaker cabinets too trendy? Will they date?
The narrow rail is a recent preference, but the door underneath is not. It is still a flat recessed panel with square corners, which is the same shape that has stayed in kitchens for two centuries. What dates a kitchen is usually the finish and the hardware, both of which are cheaper to change than the cabinets. If you want the safest version of this profile, a light neutral will outlast a strong color.
Are slim shaker cabinets good for small kitchens?
Yes. The narrower frame creates fewer lines across a short run, so the cabinets are less likely to crowd a small kitchen. The same effect works well in a long galley.
Are slim shaker cabinets harder to clean?
No more than a standard shaker. Both have a recessed panel with an inside corner where dust can settle. A slim shaker has slightly less of that corner because the frame is narrower. Wipe along the inside edge with a cloth.
