What is a Surface Mounted Hinge?

Surface Mounted HingeA surface mounted hinge is a type of hinge that is attached without a mortise being cut into the door or frame. Surface mounted hinges may be exposed or concealed.

A surface mounted hinge is a hinge that has one leaf secured to the door and the other to the frame. A mortise is not required for a surface mounted hinge to be used. Since it is not recessed into the door or frame, it is a flat hinge. Surface mounted hinges are available in both concealed and exposed varieties. They are also available as self-closing hinges, which will prevent cabinet doors from slamming shut. Surface mounted hinges come in assorted finishes and sizes so that cabinetmakers and furniture makers can find the exact hinge to match their doors. These hinges often result in a small gap between the door and the frame, which means that some cabinet makers avoid using surface mounted hinges if possible.
