Cabinet Terminology

What is a Reveal?

RevealA reveal is the part of the cabinet frame that can be seen after the door is attached. A reveal overlay occurs when there is slight space between cabinet doors that allows the cabinet’s frame to be viewable.

A reveal is a type of cabinet door in which a portion of the frame can be seen. Reveals vary in sizes depending on the space between cabinet doors. It is a point of middle ground between a full overlay door that covers the entire frame and a face frame door that is inset. A reveal overlay results when the door is smaller than the frame but larger than the opening to the cabinet’s storage area. The smaller door size exposes a portion of the frame, which is the reveal. A reveal overlay provides the cabinets with a more traditional style, whereas inset doors are more modern. Hinges that are slightly inset are ideal for installing reveal overlay doors.
